3rd Ward is one of our favorite companies for its bottom line commitment to support the arts. This miracle of an organization seems to understand how difficult it is to be a young artist in a big city and offers encouragement and, more so, opportunity. 

Both introduced on September 17th, 2009, two new amendments to existing laws regarding park concessions and conservancies.  Written by Council Member Nelson, park concessions would have specific boundaries indicated on the map of a park. And by Councils Member Mark-Viverito and Avella, the second amendment would ensure that at least one member on the board of directors of a park conservancy resides within the city council district of the park.

The Parrish Art Museum and OLA (The Organización Latino-Americana) will present the 2009 OLA Film Festival Friday, October 2nd.  The festival will feature two award- winning films, Mi Mejor Enemigo (My Best Enemy) and El baño del Papa (The Pope’s Toilet) and live music by Raul Cardenas and DJ Chile,

As I understand it, hair salons are pretty toxic enterprises on many counts. Are there any efforts underway to green up that industry?        

"A fixture of the LES, ABC No Rio supports a wide range of activities that range from art exhibits to punk shows. On the eve of its 30th anniversary, the existing structure will be torn down to make way for a new building. Taking place from May-October 2009, Hanging Out at No Rio is project that invites nine visual artists to explore the history of No Rio and the multiple communities it serves."


The Manhattan Children’s Theatre is a wonderful company with a wonderful goal: to produce high quality and affordable theater experiences for children and their families.  The material ranges from classic literature to new works, all with the aim to encourage reading, critical thinking, curiosity as well as “communication between children, their families and their educators.”

NEW YORK – Public Advocate candidate Bill de Blasio will be endorsed
by the Democratic nominees for eight City Council seats at a press
conference tomorrow at 11AM on the steps of City Hall. At the event,
the future Councilmembers will join de Blasio in calling for new
leadership, active on the issues of today, to strengthen the Public
Advocate’s office and City government.

NEW YORK – City Council candidate Margaret Chin today endorsed Bill de Blasio for Public Advocate and John Liu for Comptroller. Chin recently won a hard fought primary for the Democratic nomination against an incumbent Council Member in District 1, which includes Chinatown and lower Manhattan.

The Public School Advocacy Committee and Community Board #2 are rallying Thursday to convert the city owned building at 75 Morton Street into a new middle school.  The school would take the burden off other overcrowded city middle schools while servicing the community as well.

Downtowners have been fighting the City about the proposed “garbage garage” and salt shed for almost two years now.  Well finally (and thankfully) the community has unified, and proposed an alternative plan.  Realize Hudson Rise is “a community-based solution to where to locate the sanitation facility as well as providing public access to the space that balances the public’s fair share of the burden with a fair share of public amenities.”

Giovanni Galella's work might be described as abstract interpretations of historical and literary based  ideas, created with a free form energy that is often reminiscent of a few bars of jazz improv.
