District’s 1st Asian-American & 1st Asian-American Woman in City Council Wins 40% of Vote
Democrat Margaret Chin won big last night in the Democratic Primary for City Council in District 1. Margaret won 40% of the vote for a total of 4,541. She had an over-1,000 vote margin ahead of her nearest challenger, incumbent Alan Gerson, who took 3,520 votes.
Margaret Chin has deep roots in the district, having lived and worked in the district for over 4 decades. She also had the backing of CODA (the Coalition for a District Alternative) the political group which helped put a number of elected officials into office, including Councilwoman Rosie Mendez. In addition, she was endorsed by the major downtown newspapers, the Villager and the Downtown Express.
“As a mother, teacher, community organizer and activist, I will be that strong voice for families all across our district,” said Democrat Margaret Chin. “I will be a Councilmember for all of District 1, from SoHo to Chinatown to TriBeCa.” She emphasized that she would offer exceptional constitutent services around the clock, in all the languages and parts of the District. She also plans to focus on issues facing our City’s working families: affordable housing, the quality of our children’s education, and transportation & traffic safety.
“We truly ran a grassroots campaign, as so many of you took part in the political process for the 1st time” Margaret said in a statement to supporters and volunteers. “I look forward to representing you and working hard for you for the next 8 years. Onward to the General Election on November 3rd.”
