Japanese born artist Aica grew up drawing family portraits on the back of her father’s electrical engineering blueprints.  In Osaka, the city where she grew up, high rises and factories were tempered with rich cultural traditions.  Very much the product of her culture, Aicia draws inspiration from animae and manga.  However unlike other Japanese artists who portray such forms as dark, Aica’s works tend to be subtle and hopeful.
 

Tenants and Neighbors is a grassroots organization that aims to empower tenants by uniting, advocating for tenants rights, and participating on a local, state and even national level to preserve the at-risk affordable housing.  The text below is an email updating us on their progress.

Dear EarthTalk: With plug-in hybrid and electric cars due to hit the roads sometime soon, will there be places to plug them in besides at home? And if so, how much will it cost to re-charge?

Rob Hollander is a community activist extraordinaire.  He recently emailed us links to affordable housing units in Chelsea, Midtown, and Ft. Greene.  Rent is such a hardship in this city, and never has it been as spotlighted as in these troubling times.  So if you are eligible I suggest you apply.


Has it really come to this?  The Working Families Party is holding a contest to find out which renter really has it worst.  Points that will work in your favor:  no heat, unsafe stairs, rusty water, rats.  Wow the winner must be so lucky….  Well at least they’ll have a month’s rent paid for so they can enjoy their hell hole.   


While Allan Tannenbaum was the photo editor of the SoHo Weekly News he produced a body of work that can only be described as iconic.  His photographs documented the 70’s from parties to politics, from street gangs to street divas, and from the homeless to Hollywood stars. 


How does the microwave compare in energy use, say, to using a gas or electric stove burner to heat water for a cup of tea? 


As The SoHo Journal has reported, the Department of Sanitation's intent to build a massive garage to house garbage trucks on Canal and Washington Streets has been controversial, and fiercely opposed.  Here is a letter we received from the community group, Save Hudson Square, detailing the latest on their protest.  What do you think??
